Why it matters

A health app for
immigrant parents.

Many families care for a parent whose first language is not English. In Canada, 4.6 million people speak mainly a language other than English or French at home, and Mandarin and Punjabi are each spoken mainly at home by more than half a million people (Statistics Canada, 2022). A reminder in a language you only half read is a reminder that is easy to dismiss.

Language guides: medication reminder app in Punjabi, in Hindi, in Urdu, and in Tagalog.

All 23

Which languages
does Cureva support?

Cureva runs in English, French, Spanish, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil, Tagalog, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, German, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese. If a single phrase has not been translated yet, it shows in English rather than leaving a blank. That covers both official languages in Canada, Spanish for many families in the United States, and the South Asian, East Asian and Filipino languages spoken in so many homes across both countries.

How families use it

One family,
several languages.

Each person picks their own language

Your mother can see Cureva in Punjabi on her phone while you see the same medicines and doses in English on yours.

Medicine names stay as entered

Names are shown as they were typed or scanned, so they match the box from the pharmacy.

Missed-dose alerts in your language

Linked caregivers get a push if a dose stays unconfirmed after a short grace period, shown in the app language they chose.

A daily check-in from Eva

Eva, the companion inside Cureva, greets your parent by first name and asks how they are feeling.

Siblings in different cities

Up to 5 family and 5 professional caregivers can be linked, each with their own permissions and their own report schedule.

A report for the doctor

A doctor-ready PDF of medicines, adherence, readings and symptoms helps when the doctor and the patient do not share a first language.

For caregivers: Cureva for family caregivers, missed medication alerts, why language matters in health apps, and medication reminder apps in Canada.

Choosing an app

What to check before you install
an app for a parent.

Language support varies a lot between health apps. Some translate only the store listing, others translate the menus but not the reminders. Before you choose, open the app in your parent’s language and look at the screens they will actually use: the reminder itself, the button to mark a dose as taken, and the list of medicines. Check that the script reads naturally, that the buttons are large enough with their phone’s text size, and that you, as the caregiver, can see the same information in your own language without changing their phone.

Set it up side by side

Sit with your parent, switch the app to their language, and add the medicines together so they recognise every screen.

Keep the box nearby

Medicine names stay as entered, so type them exactly as they appear on the pharmacy label.

Agree on who gets alerts

Decide together which family members are linked, so a missed-dose push goes to someone who can call in the right language.
